Mile End was the site of the peasant’s revolt of thirteen eighty one, when a small scale uprising against Brentwood tax collectors spread out to surrounding villages and escalated to a full flared revolt. Mile End was also home to London’s first Yiddish theatre. In eighteen eighty three, a troupe of refugee actors, led by Jacob Adler arrived in Mile End and established a theatre with the assistance of local amateur actors. In result, the Russian Jewish Operatic Company was founded and subsequently made its debut in its own Brick Lane Theatre.
